Baest (initally spelled Bæst) is a Danish death metal band formed in 2015 and yet another band totally new to me. Within the last seven years the death metal newcomers have released three studio albums and two EPs that were mainly met with enthusiam among death metal fans and critics. Touring with Abbath, Decapitated and Hatebreed as well as playing on several festivals throughout Europe quickly turned them into a serious and well-attuned live band.

Death Metal is difficult for me. So far this has been the metal genre I am struggling with most. Anyhow, there is an abundance of subgenres and fusion genres in death metal, so I am confident there will be several bands I will come to like. Why am I struggling? Well, let's have a look at parts of the death metal definition: "Fast, heavily distorted and low tuned guitars. Aggressive and powerful drums. Abrupt tempo, key and time signature changes. Death growls. Hoarse roars/snarls. Glamorisation of violence in the lyrics."

From all the metal subgenres I've been listening to so far death metal is the most extreme for me. The combination of the very dominant vocals and the relentless superfast drumming delivers a brutal force that just about knocks you off your feet. You need to be prepared for death metal and I find it takes an enormous amount of active listening in order to comprehend it. It is nothing I can listen to as background noise while doing something else. Plus, I am absolutely sensitive when it comes to gore and violence, so I am actually easily put off.

Enter: Goregasm. Perfect title for a delicate creature like myself 🙉. Whilst I am slightly overwhelmed with the lyrics this song is actually really cool and one of my favourites on the Necro Sapiens album, Baest's latest album from 2021. It comes along very doomy and the part at 1:26 when the stomping rhythm starts is just perfect.

I have listened to Necro Sapiens a couple of times by now and it grew on me. The first time was exhausting and I couldn't listen to it in one session. But I got there eventually. What really stands out to me are Simon Olsen's vocals. He is delivering the death growls perfectly while still managing a very clear pronunciation. Several tracks have elements of doom metal and come along stomping and grooving (Czar / Abbatoir / Goregasm). Meathook Massacre meanwhile is relatively thrashy. Despite the apparent aggressiveness and brutality of this music Baest still manage to create catchy tunes. The title track Necro Sapiens is the best example here. My favourite tracks on this album: Necro Sapiens, Goregasm, Abbatoir.

I am actually really looking forward to seeing them play live as I am 100 % sure they will totally deliver.
