2023 - Another Metal Year

Seriously, 2023 has flown by. Two years ago, I started this project and it is still on. I didn't post as regularly as I would have liked, but let's take a look at my metal year 2023 anyhow. What was going on?

Spotify Wrapped was a bit of a mystery again when it came to my top genres. I have no idea what could be behind Compositional Ambient, but apparently I listened to it quite frequently. The Soundtrack part is another mystery. I can't think of any soundtrack I listened to. Alas, Metal in first place, Rock in second (a lot of Pentagram and 69 Eyes), Black Metal in fourth. That sounds about right. Top artist was no surprise as well. To be honest, anything else would have outraged me. Me and Peter Steele spent every minute I could spare together.

I just reread my article about 2022 and had to laugh about me loosing 10 kg of weight in the first few months of 2022, because of listening to metal on my walks. Well, spoiler alert - that weight is back on! 2023 was a bit more on the downer side emotionally. My generous daily walks were replaced by more time spent in front of the computer screen in favour of my other writing project. More time indoors, more time glued to my desk chair, more calories sticking to my butt. I had to prioritise my free time and exercise and also listening to music fell a bit short. I was pretty diligent till the Wacken disaster hit in August. This really brought me down and it took me a while to recover. After this, I didn't write a thing about metal for two months straight. When my next silver lining turned out to be a disappointment as well, I nearly packed it in.

It was really thanks to Florian, who sent me his favourite bands and metal albums that my ambition was rekindled. There is still so much I don't know. So I didn't go to Wacken this year. So I missed Iron Maiden. So the Alcest concert was a non-event. So what? I realised I had grown a bit lazy. I was content listenening to the same bands again and again and again. My love for Type O Negative was sparked in Denmark this year. Lying in bed in our cottage in the dunes, listening to the wind howling and the rain splattering against the window panes, October Rust made me as happy as a woman could possibly be. From this day onward, there was hardly anything else for me. October Rust stays my favourite Type O Negative album, closely followed by Life is Killing Me and Dead Again.

Since October, I got back into listening to Black Metal and I will continue down this past for a while. There are still so many subgenres I haven't explored yet. But I will get there. For now, I feel pretty good at where I am.

As far as concerts go, 2023 was fun. I saw Kreator, Lamb of God and The 69 Eyes in March. The Riven in May, Windrose in July, Alcest in October and Solstafir in November.

For next year, I already have tickets for Skálmöld in Bremen, Klash of the Ruhrpott (seeing Sodom live for the first time, I can't fucking wait!) and of course Wacken again. Let's see what Wacken will have in store for me next year. My expectations are a lot lower, so maybe they can be met this time.

My blog will continue in 2024 and I intend to be a bit more adventurous again, dipping my toes into yet unknown waters. We'll see where this will take me! Stay tuned!
