[...] heavy metal concerts [...] "the sensory equivalent of war".

Arnett(1996), Metalheads, page 14

All my reservations about heavy metal nicely summed up in this excerpt.

Nevertheless, my sunday morning began nicely with an animated conversation about heavy metal during breakfast with my husband. The previous evening I had started my research with reading the general Wikipedia entry about heavy metal, providing myself with a rough overview of the subject.

What I found interesting and what I wasn't aware of at all is that heavy metal has it's roots in rock and that at some point in time even bands like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi were considered heavy metal bands. I like listening to Aerosmith, so there was an unexpected early entry point for me to the topic.

Heavy metal as a genre developed in the late 1960 and early 1970 and considered the most famous pioneers are Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. I was pleased with myself that I already knew all three bands at least by name. I know some songs from each of those, the most popular one's I guess. Although I even had a Black Sabbath album at one point as a teenager, given to me by my neighbour as a ripped and burned CD. This was of course Paranoid with the same-named song. So this is what I will listen to now first.
