Agalloch from Portland doesn't fit in any genre easily. Their music has been labeled as atmospheric folk/doom/black metal or post-rock/post-metal and their style differs on their various releases. The first album I've picked up was their second studio album The Mantle, released in 2002 and for me it fits nicely in the post-metal category together with Alcest and Sólstafir. 111 days till W:O:A 2023. I am staying in Iceland with Sólstafir. It was impossible for me to pick one album for the sake of this blog article. I've been all over the place with Sólstafir and I love everything I've heard so far. And I think this is part of Sólstafir's secret power. Their music is less about being contained to one album, one concept, one story. Their music is about atmosphere. About feelings. It is music to think to, to let your mind wander, to flee to other realms.

Alcest - Les Voyages de l'Âme

I was beginning to feel relatively secure in my metal knowledge after reading up on so many metal bands. But then a friend of mine told me about Alcest, one of his favourite bands of all time. He sent me a link to Alcest's third studio album from 2012 Les Voyages de l'Âme [The Voyages of the Soul]. I started playing it - and loved it immediately.
