The Night Eternal - Moonlit Cross
NWOBHM · 29/04/2023
91 days till W:O:A 2023. I had such a hard time moving on from Sólstafir. As always when I find something I really like, I totally binged their music over the last couple of weeks. But - with only 91 days to go, I still have a lot more preparation to do with regards to the Wacken line-up, so I picked up the next band on my list: The Eternal Night. Albeit a relatively new band formed in 2018 in Essen their sound is authentically oldschool. Their first studio album The Night Eternal (2021)...
APRIL 16TH - EPITAPH
NWOBHM · 16/12/2022
The other day, I received a small package from the UK. It was from Chris Harris, ex-guitarist of the band APRIL 16TH. What a pleasant surprise! Chris sent me their CD EPITAPH (2021) and asked me to review it in my NWOBHM section, which I am very happy do do. So, here we go. APRIL 16TH was active between 1985 and 1991 and had a stable line-up in those years: Founder members Chris Harris and Lawrence Mills played guitar, Dave Russell (the man with great hair) provided his vocals, John Fisher...

Venom - Welcome to Hell
NWOBHM · 10/06/2022
The band I'm writing about today has popped up in my metal research so often and has been quoted as highly influential by so many artists, there is no way around it. One can't write a metal blog and not mention Venom and their debut album Welcome to Hell from 1981. Venom formed in 1978 in Newcastle during the NWOBHM era. By 1981 Venom was a trio with Conrad Lant aka Cronos on bass and as vocalist, Jeffrey Dunn aka Mantas on guitar and Anthony Bray aka Abaddon on drums. This line-up came to be...
Iron Maiden
NWOBHM · 04/01/2022
During the NWOBHM many many bands came up and contributed with demos, singles and individually produced albums. By the mid 1980s the movement of glam metal ended the NWOBHM and only a few bands managed to come out of it. One of the bands that had its roots in the NWOBHM, outlasted it and is still one of the most popular heavy metal bands today is Iron Maiden. The band has released 17 studio albums and numerous singles between 1980 and 2021.

Girlschool
NWOBHM · 24/12/2021
I'm staying in the era of NWOBHM for a little while longer. Especially within my research of Motörhead I came across one band name that was mentioned frequently: Girlschool. Formed in 1978 Girlschool was another band that came up with so many other bands during the NWOBHM. Girlschool is today considered "one of the longest-running-all-female-rock-bands, still alive after 40 years". That alone is reason to look closer at this band. The original band members Kim McAuliffe (rythm guitar, vocals),...
Motörhead
NWOBHM · 19/12/2021
With a slight detour over Iggy Pop and Ronnie James Dio I have now arrived at a new era of the heavy metal genre: New Wave Of British Heavy Metal or NWOBHM. The NWOBHM was an underground phenomenon in the mid 1970s bringing out a new sound that had not been heard until then. The first heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath, Rainbow or Judas Priest still had very clear and audible blues roots and were still very close to hard rock. In the beginning of the 1970s the popularity of rock and heavy...
